Health and Community Services in Australia

Australia’s mental health, alcohol and other drugs, and community services sectors play a vital role in supporting individuals, families, and youth. With growing demand for early intervention, recovery programs, and community-based support, there are increasing job opportunities for trained professionals across these fields.

Key industry data includes:

  • Around 21.5% of Australians experience a mental health condition each year, and only 198,700 of 1.29 million Australians with a substance use disorder receive treatment. This highlights the growing demand for skilled professionals who can provide recovery-focused support across mental health and AOD services. (AIHW, 2025) (AIHW, 2025)
  • There are 16,200 youth workers currently employed across Australia, showing this is a steadily growing and valued field. With over 46,000 community services roles listed nationally on SEEK, there’s a strong demand for caring, skilled professionals who can make a real difference in people’s lives. (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025)
  • Professionals trained in these dual qualifications can work across diverse settings, including community and youth services, health clinics, residential programs, homelessness and justice programs, and outreach teams.

As awareness of mental health and substance use issues grows, skilled workers are needed to provide trauma-informed, person-centred care, helping individuals rebuild confidence, guiding families toward stability, and making a lasting impact on communities through advocacy, education, and compassionate support.
