How to become a community services case manager in Australia

To become a community services case manager in Australia, you’ll need a relevant qualification, most commonly the Diploma of Community Services (CHC52025), where case management is a core unit. Many people start with the Certificate IV in Community Services to enter the sector, then step up to the Diploma to move into case manager roles.

What does a community services case manager do?

A community services case manager coordinates support for people facing challenges: housing instability, family violence, disability, mental health, or financial hardship. Rather than delivering one service, they assess a person’s needs, build a support plan, connect them to the right services, and review progress over time.

The work blends practical coordination with genuine care: listening well, advocating for clients, keeping accurate records, and working alongside other services so no one falls through the gaps. It suits people who are organised, calm under pressure, and motivated by helping others move forward.

Case management is a defined skill set, and it’s taught directly in the Diploma of Community Services through the core unit CHCCSM017 Facilitate and Review Case Management, which also carries the 100-hour work placement.

What qualifications do you need to become a case manager?

You don’t need a university degree. Community services case management is a vocational pathway, and most employers look for a nationally recognised Community Services qualification:

If you’re brand new and want to test the field first, a short Community Services course is a low-commitment taster, but the Certificate IV and Diploma are the qualifications employers recognise for case work and case management.

How to become a community services case manager: step by step

Step 1: Choose the qualification that matches your goal

If you’re aiming directly at case manager roles, the Diploma of Community Services (CHC52025) is the most direct route. If you’re new to the sector, start with the Certificate IV in Community Services (CHC42021) and step up to the Diploma afterwards; the Certificate IV is a direct pathway in.

Step 2: Apply for your course

Applying at Hader is straightforward: complete the online form and upload your documents. There’s no Year 12 requirement; instead, entry is assessed through an LLND (language, literacy, numeracy and digital) assessment, so you’re placed in the qualification that suits your current skills. For the Certificate IV you’ll need to be 18 or older and an Australian citizen or permanent resident. The Diploma also asks for a Working with Children Check, a police check, and the capacity to complete the 100-hour placement. Interest-free weekly payment plans are available through Study Now, Pay Later.

Step 3: Build practical capability and complete your placement

Your study combines weekly Zoom sessions, self-paced learning, and monthly 1:1 mentoring. The Diploma includes 100 hours of guaranteed work placement, coordinated through Hader’s SkilTrak partner within reach of your home, where you apply case management in a real setting. (The standalone Certificate IV has no mandatory placement; career-readiness there is supported through Hader’s Job-Ready Program.)

Step 4: Step into a role and grow

With a Certificate IV you can enter the sector as a Community Support Worker or Case Worker; with the Diploma you’re qualified for Case Manager, Community Services Coordinator, and Team Leader roles. From there, many people progress into program coordination or move toward the Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management.

Certificate IV or Diploma: which one for case management?

The short version: if “case manager” is the goal, the Diploma is the qualification that names it and teaches it. The Certificate IV is the faster, cheaper way in if you want to start working, and earning, sooner, then build toward the Diploma.

How much do community services case managers earn?

Case manager pay sits above general support-worker pay because of the added responsibility for assessment, planning, and coordination. In Australia, case manager roles are advertised from around $85,000 according to SEEK, while entry support roles at Certificate IV level start around $60,000–$80,000.

I’ve been working in Community Services for the past six years. I got into this work because I love helping people, not because of my studies. When I finally decided to study, I spent a lot of time looking for the best option that would fit my life. I was working full-time as a youth worker, married, and had a newborn at home. I couldn’t go to face-to-face classes, so studying online was my only choice.I’m over 40 and hadn’t studied in more than 20 years, so starting again was really hard. Learning how to use a new website, understanding how the classes and assessments worked, and even things like what “RPL” meant were all new to me. After a long week at work, keeping up with classes felt overwhelming. I think it’s tough for any adult to go back to studying after so long.Even though it was a big challenge, the Hader Institute supported me all the way. They guided me, kept me on track, and made me feel like I was part of something. But the real difference for me was Viki Hannah. Her kindness, patience, and encouragement really helped me move forward. She saw the experience I already had and helped me believe in myself during some really hard times. I feel like I found a mentor without even looking for one — and that’s something special.I truly hope I can keep in touch with Viki, and it’s good to know I can always reach out to Hader Institute again if I ever need support.

I am delighted to provide a referral based on my experience studying with the Hader Institute. After much contemplation, I began my studies in late October, enrolling in the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD). At the age of 55, I initially worried that I might be “too old” to return to education. To my surprise and delight, I’ve nearly completed my first course and have even progressed to the AOD Diploma.Choosing the right educational institution was a significant decision for me. The affordability of Hader’s fees and the flexible content delivery were key factors that made it stand out. I’ve found the option to attend Duane’s incredibly informative online classes when needed invaluable, while also having the freedom to request extra modules so I can study at my own pace. The support I’ve received from the trainers has been exceptional. Mika, in particular, has been wonderfully encouraging, and Sasha’s patience and wealth of knowledge have made navigating my studies much easier, even as I ask countless questions. As someone who isn’t particularly comfortable with technology, I’ve also greatly appreciated the simplicity and user-friendliness of the Axcelerate portal—it’s been such a relief.Embarking on this journey was a big decision, but I am now immensely grateful that I chose Hader Institute. The support, flexibility, and resources provided have made all the difference, and I’m thrilled with the progress I’ve made so far.
