How to become a case worker in Australia
To become a case worker in Australia, you’ll need a nationally recognised community services qualification; most commonly the Certificate IV in Community Services (CHC42021), which takes around 12 months to complete online. You don’t need a university degree, and you don’t need prior experience in the sector. From there, many case workers step up to the Diploma of Community Services (CHC52025) to move into case management.
What does a case worker do?
Case workers are the frontline of community services. They work directly with people going through hard times — housing instability, family violence, financial hardship, disability, or recovery from alcohol and other drug use — and help them get the support they need, day to day.
In practice, that looks like meeting clients where they are, helping with applications for housing or income support, arranging transport to appointments, keeping accurate case notes, and following the support plan a case manager has set. The work asks for patience, good boundaries, and the ability to stay steady when a client’s situation is messy. What it gives back is rare: you see people’s lives change at close range.
Case workers are employed by not-for-profit and community organisations, housing and homelessness services, family services, disability providers, AOD services, and government-funded programs across Australia.
Case worker vs case manager: what’s the difference?
The two roles work side by side but sit at different levels of responsibility. A case worker delivers direct, day-to-day support: meeting clients, following the support plan, and connecting people with services. A case manager assesses a person’s needs, designs the support plan, and coordinates everyone involved in delivering it.
The qualifications mirror the roles. The Certificate IV in Community Services prepares you for case worker roles; the Diploma of Community Services — where case management is a core unit — qualifies you for case manager and coordinator roles. What qualifications do you need to be a case worker?
Employers advertising case worker roles typically ask for a Certificate IV in a relevant field, and the Certificate IV in Community Services (CHC42021) is the standard entry qualification. It covers the foundations the job runs on: supporting people with complex needs, working legally and ethically, advocacy, and community development.

How to become a case worker: step by step
Step 1: Enrol in the Certificate IV in Community Services
Entry is straightforward: you’ll need to be 18 or older and an Australian citizen or permanent resident. There’s no Year 12 requirement — your enrolment is assessed through an LLND (language, literacy, numeracy and digital) skills assessment instead. The course runs for around 12 months, 100% online, with weekly live classes, self-paced study, and 1:1 mentoring.
Step 2: Build experience while you study
The Certificate IV has no mandatory placement, so you can complete it fully online while working or caring for family. If hands-on placement matters to you at this level, the Dual Certificate IV in Community Services and Youth Work includes 80 hours of guaranteed work placement. Volunteering with a local community organisation is another practical way to build sector contacts while you study.
Step 3: Graduate job-ready and apply
Every Hader learner gets career support through the Job-Ready Program: resume and interview preparation, job search assistance, and employer connections. Case worker, community support worker, and outreach roles are the natural first applications.
Step 4: Step up when you’re ready
After a year or two of case work, the Diploma of Community Services (CHC52025) — with its 100 hours of guaranteed placement and case management core unit — is the qualification that moves you into case manager and coordinator roles.
