How to become a mental health worker in Australia

Wanting to become a mental health worker often starts somewhere personal. Maybe you’ve walked beside someone through a hard time, or come through one yourself, and you’ve felt how much a steady, caring presence matters. That’s a good place to begin, and the path from there is more straightforward than most people expect.

This guide walks you through it: what the role involves, the qualification you need, how work placement works, what you can earn, and the four steps that take you from where you are now to your first mental health role.

What does a mental health worker do?

A mental health worker supports people who are living with mental health challenges, walking alongside them as they work towards recovery and wellbeing. The work is practical and person-centred. On any given day it might mean listening without judgement, helping someone build daily routines, connecting them with services for housing or income, supporting a recovery plan, and advocating for their needs.

You’ll find mental health workers in community health services, non-government organisations, residential and outreach programs, hospitals, and support-at-home settings across Australia. It’s frontline, relational work: less about clinical treatment, more about consistent, human support.

If you’d like a fuller picture of the role day to day, our guide to a career as a mental health support worker breaks down the responsibilities, settings, and skills in detail.

Mental health worker, or another role?

“Mental health” covers a lot of different jobs, and it helps to know where a mental health (support) worker sits:

  • Mental health support worker — provides day-to-day, non-clinical support in community and social settings. Entry is through a vocational qualification like the Certificate IV in Mental Health. This is the role this guide is about.
  • Peer worker — supports others by drawing on their own lived experience of mental health recovery. A distinct and growing role; if this sounds like you, compare the two in peer worker vs mental health worker.
  • Counsellor, psychologist, mental health nurse, psychiatrist — clinical or therapeutic roles that require university degrees and, in some cases, registration. These are different pathways to the one described here.

You don’t need a university degree to start supporting people’s mental health. A nationally recognised vocational qualification is the recognised entry point into support and community roles.

What qualifications do you need?

The recognised entry point is the CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health — a nationally recognised qualification that prepares you for support roles across Australia. It gives you the practical skills and ethical grounding to work safely alongside people experiencing mental health challenges.

From there, the CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health takes you further, into roles with more responsibility, assessment, and coordination. Many people start with the Certificate IV and step up to the Diploma once they’re working.

Not sure which level to begin at? Certificate IV vs Diploma of Mental Health lays the two side by side so you can pick the right starting point.

The pathway, step by step

Step 1: Choose training that fits your life

Look for a nationally recognised qualification delivered in a way that supports you rather than disrupts you. Hader Institute of Education delivers its mental health training online across Australia, with real-world case studies, interactive modules, and a paced structure that builds your confidence gradually. You study from wherever you are, without putting the rest of your life on hold.

Step 2: Enrol and begin your study

Once you’ve chosen your course, enrolling is made simple, with support around you from the start. There are flexible ways to pay, including interest-free weekly or fortnightly plans, so cost isn’t a barrier to beginning. (If you’d like to understand what funding and payment options exist, see government-funded mental health courses.)

From your first orientation call onwards, you’re part of a connected learning experience: weekly online classes you can join live or catch up on later, one-on-one mentoring, and a Learner Support Team you can always reach.

Step 3: Complete your work placement

Both the Certificate IV in Mental Health (80 hours) and the Diploma of Mental Health (160 hours) include a guaranteed work placement — real, supervised experience in a community setting. Hader coordinates this through SkilTrak, which arranges a placement within reach of your home, anywhere in Australia. Placement is where your learning becomes real: you apply your skills with actual people, supported and unrushed, surrounded by professionals who expect you to still be learning.

Step 4: Get job-ready and find work

The final step is stepping into the workplace with confidence. Hader’s Job-Ready Program focuses on practical preparation: workplace scenarios, realistic simulations, and interview and application support, so you finish ready to work, not just qualified on paper. For a sense of where the qualification can lead, Diploma of Mental Health job opportunities maps out the roles graduates move into.

How much do mental health workers earn?

Qualified mental health support workers in Australia typically earn around $60,000 to $80,000 a year, with peer-work and diploma-level roles reaching higher depending on experience and setting. Most roles sit under the SCHADS Award, with a full-time entry floor in the high-$60,000s. Pay tends to rise with a Diploma and with experience.

For a full breakdown by role, level, and setting, see the mental health worker salary guide.

Are mental health workers in demand?

Yes. As more Australians seek support and the conversation around mental health opens up, demand for qualified support workers keeps growing across community, outreach, and residential settings. For people entering now, that means real, ongoing opportunity, particularly for those willing to build their skills through a Certificate IV and Diploma.

Frequently asked questions

What qualifications do you need to be a mental health worker in Australia?
The recognised entry point is the nationally recognised CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health. It qualifies you for support roles across community, outreach, and residential settings. Many workers then complete the CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health to move into roles with more responsibility. You don’t need a university degree to work in mental health support roles.

How do you get started in mental health work?
Start by enrolling in a Certificate IV in Mental Health with a nationally recognised provider. You study the qualification (online and flexibly, if that suits you), complete a supervised work placement to gain real experience, and use job-ready support to step into your first role.

How much do mental health workers get paid in Australia?
Qualified mental health support workers generally earn around $60,000 to $80,000 a year, with most roles covered by the SCHADS Award (a full-time entry floor in the high-$60,000s). Pay increases with a Diploma and experience. See the salary guide for detail.

How long does it take to become a mental health worker?
A Certificate IV in Mental Health can typically be completed in around 12 months, including work placement, though flexible online study lets you go faster or slower to suit your life. The Diploma takes longer and builds on the Certificate IV.

Is mental health work worth it?
Many people describe it as some of the most meaningful work they’ve done. It can be emotionally demanding, but the sense of purpose, connection, and genuine impact is why so many stay in the field and grow their careers within it.

I’ve been working in Community Services for the past six years. I got into this work because I love helping people, not because of my studies. When I finally decided to study, I spent a lot of time looking for the best option that would fit my life. I was working full-time as a youth worker, married, and had a newborn at home. I couldn’t go to face-to-face classes, so studying online was my only choice.I’m over 40 and hadn’t studied in more than 20 years, so starting again was really hard. Learning how to use a new website, understanding how the classes and assessments worked, and even things like what “RPL” meant were all new to me. After a long week at work, keeping up with classes felt overwhelming. I think it’s tough for any adult to go back to studying after so long.Even though it was a big challenge, the Hader Institute supported me all the way. They guided me, kept me on track, and made me feel like I was part of something. But the real difference for me was Viki Hannah. Her kindness, patience, and encouragement really helped me move forward. She saw the experience I already had and helped me believe in myself during some really hard times. I feel like I found a mentor without even looking for one — and that’s something special.I truly hope I can keep in touch with Viki, and it’s good to know I can always reach out to Hader Institute again if I ever need support.

I am delighted to provide a referral based on my experience studying with the Hader Institute. After much contemplation, I began my studies in late October, enrolling in the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD). At the age of 55, I initially worried that I might be “too old” to return to education. To my surprise and delight, I’ve nearly completed my first course and have even progressed to the AOD Diploma.Choosing the right educational institution was a significant decision for me. The affordability of Hader’s fees and the flexible content delivery were key factors that made it stand out. I’ve found the option to attend Duane’s incredibly informative online classes when needed invaluable, while also having the freedom to request extra modules so I can study at my own pace. The support I’ve received from the trainers has been exceptional. Mika, in particular, has been wonderfully encouraging, and Sasha’s patience and wealth of knowledge have made navigating my studies much easier, even as I ask countless questions. As someone who isn’t particularly comfortable with technology, I’ve also greatly appreciated the simplicity and user-friendliness of the Axcelerate portal—it’s been such a relief.Embarking on this journey was a big decision, but I am now immensely grateful that I chose Hader Institute. The support, flexibility, and resources provided have made all the difference, and I’m thrilled with the progress I’ve made so far.
