BSB40520
Certificate IV in Leadership and Management
Mode of study: 100% Online Self-Paced
No Exams
The BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management is a nationally recognised AQF level 4 qualification. You study it online over 12 months, with a live trainer-led class every week.
The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management suits team members moving into their first supervisory or team leader role. It also suits frontline leaders who already guide others and organise and check a team’s work, but don’t yet hold a qualification for it.
The units focus on leading a team day to day: workplace relationships, communication, and coordinating operational plans and resources. The course applies across a broad range of industries. If you lead a team in community services, health, or support work, one elective covers how an organisation supports its people’s mental health after a disruptive event (BSBWHS432X).

Course Outcomes
The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management gives you evidence of your skills to show an employer; promotion and job offers still rest with them.
This course has no work placement. You’ll have access to our Job-Ready Program, Hader’s career-readiness support.
Who this course suits. The course is designed for you if:
- you’re a first-time supervisor or team leader, or a frontline leader
- you want a nationally recognised qualification for leading a team day to day
- you can plan on about 26 hours a week to finish in 12 months; apart from the weekly 3-hour live class, you choose when you study
You still need to meet the entry requirements set out in the FAQ below.
BSB40520 is listed as current on training.gov.au.
If you complete some units but not the whole course, you receive a Statement of Attainment for the units you’ve completed.

The qualification is designed for roles such as team leader, supervisor, and frontline leader.
Salary figures are indicative only, sourced from SEEK team leader salary data, October 2026. They are not a guarantee of earnings. Actual salaries vary by industry, employer, location, experience, and qualifications.
Study Pathways
Finish the Certificate IV and you can move up to the Diploma of Leadership and Management or into other business services qualifications. Universities decide credit for earlier study case by case, so ask the university you plan to apply to.
If you’re new to leading people, or you lead a team’s work day to day, start here. If you already manage a team’s performance or are moving into middle management, step up to the Diploma.
Compare both levels on our leadership and management courses page.
Course Units
You’ll complete 12 units: five core and seven electives. Your trainer may run them in a different order to suit class scheduling.

I’ve been studying with Hader Institute for the past year and am currently completing my Diploma in Youth Work. My experience so far has been nothing short of outstanding.I’ve had the absolute pleasure of having Viki as my lecturer. She consistently delivers rich, detailed education throughout our online classes. Viki is approachable, enthusiastic, and always eager to answer any question—never with judgment, always with encouragement.Hader Institute itself is incredibly supportive. They regularly check in with phone calls to see how I’m progressing and to offer any additional support I might need. That level of care is rare and genuinely appreciated. The learning environment is both supportive and informative. Compared to other institutions I’ve studied at, I can honestly say I’ve never felt so comfortable, accepted, and encouraged in an educational setting. The sense of being valued as a student makes a huge difference.Highly recommend Hader Institute to anyone looking to further their education in a welcoming and empowering environment.

I'm really glad I chose to study at Hader. A big shoutout to my lecturer Blake for being so encouraging and always taking the time to explain things clearly. Also, thank you to the learner support team, they’ve been super helpful whenever I needed a hand

I’ve been working in Community Services for the past six years. I got into this work because I love helping people, not because of my studies. When I finally decided to study, I spent a lot of time looking for the best option that would fit my life. I was working full-time as a youth worker, married, and had a newborn at home. I couldn’t go to face-to-face classes, so studying online was my only choice.I’m over 40 and hadn’t studied in more than 20 years, so starting again was really hard. Learning how to use a new website, understanding how the classes and assessments worked, and even things like what “RPL” meant were all new to me. After a long week at work, keeping up with classes felt overwhelming. I think it’s tough for any adult to go back to studying after so long.Even though it was a big challenge, the Hader Institute supported me all the way. They guided me, kept me on track, and made me feel like I was part of something. But the real difference for me was Viki Hannah. Her kindness, patience, and encouragement really helped me move forward. She saw the experience I already had and helped me believe in myself during some really hard times. I feel like I found a mentor without even looking for one — and that’s something special.I truly hope I can keep in touch with Viki, and it’s good to know I can always reach out to Hader Institute again if I ever need support.

Viki Hannah was an absolute great help to me during my course, provided me with one on one support every week to help me get through all my roleplay assessments, I alway felt that Viki went out of her way to make sure that I was supported in every way that I needed to be able to complete my study.had a great experience during my final work placement observation. Charlotte’s instructions to help me prepare for the assessment were very clear and helpful, and she also supported me with a job I am applying for. I’m very grateful for the guidance and support I received from Hader Institute of Education!

My Trainer was Viki Hannah, what I liked most about our work together in classes and assessment support was how approachable and supportive you were. You always explained things clearly and took the time to make sure I understood, especially when I felt unsure about certain parts of the work. Your encouragement really helped boost my confidence. You made a real positive difference to my experience. For example, during my assessment preparation, you gave really helpful one-to-one guidance that made the tasks feel more manageable. I felt more organised and motivated because of your help. Thank you

A great place to study with, and a massive thank you to Cayan! An absolute awesome educator with sound knowledge and always happy to go above and beyond to get his students across the line. A top bloke as well. Couldn't be happier with the way he conducts himself professionally.

I want to thank Hader for hearing my special need's for my cert 4 AOD course and connecting me with Viki Hannah.Viki has dedicated her time with me to answer any concerns and question's regarding my studies. Viki has always been attentive to help me understand where I may be having trouble understanding. Viki does this by using her amazing skills in communication, compassion, empathy, experience and wisdom.I would also like to thank the amazing Duane for doing the same while facilitating our weekly 3 hour class. Hader has a great team of dedicated people and I feel happy that I chose Hader.

The best staff and study experience. Really positive environment and helping nature of everyone listening to the queries and everything. I am glad I made the right decision. My trainer Viki is the most supportive and emotionally intelligent woman. She is someone you can always rely upon.

My experiences with Hader has been wonderful and they have made me feel right at home in my studies in cert IV mental health.Cayan has been the teacher for our Wednesday night classes and he has been amazing in his delivery of the units we have completed and is always readily available with any help or advice we need.He is a very valued part of the institute of education and comes highly recommended.I would also like to give a shout out to Vicki who has been ready to answer any queries I have had and provide any extra guidance I have needed. My Initial contact person Sasha was amazing in explaining the ins and out of the course structures and so on and is also always available to answer any of my questions.I have also had conversations with Mika, a learning support officer who has been, and is a treasure trove of information and has been a fantastic support throughout.Whether you are starting out your education journey or trying to get back into the workforce in a second career through further learning, Hader Institute has you covered in all angles and will ensure you succeed in whichever career path you choose.Best wishesMartin O'Connor

I am delighted to provide a referral based on my experience studying with the Hader Institute. After much contemplation, I began my studies in late October, enrolling in the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD). At the age of 55, I initially worried that I might be “too old” to return to education. To my surprise and delight, I’ve nearly completed my first course and have even progressed to the AOD Diploma.Choosing the right educational institution was a significant decision for me. The affordability of Hader’s fees and the flexible content delivery were key factors that made it stand out. I’ve found the option to attend Duane’s incredibly informative online classes when needed invaluable, while also having the freedom to request extra modules so I can study at my own pace. The support I’ve received from the trainers has been exceptional. Mika, in particular, has been wonderfully encouraging, and Sasha’s patience and wealth of knowledge have made navigating my studies much easier, even as I ask countless questions. As someone who isn’t particularly comfortable with technology, I’ve also greatly appreciated the simplicity and user-friendliness of the Axcelerate portal—it’s been such a relief.Embarking on this journey was a big decision, but I am now immensely grateful that I chose Hader Institute. The support, flexibility, and resources provided have made all the difference, and I’m thrilled with the progress I’ve made so far.

When the LLND assessment happens. You complete it online before you enrol, as part of your Pre-Training Review, and then talk it through with a trainer. If you’re assessed below the entry level in any skill, we tell you before you enrol whether the course suits you. We enrol you only where the support or adjustment you need is something we can provide and we’ve agreed it with you. That support may be one-on-one help with a trainer; we may also refer you to a literacy support service, or suggest waiting or a different course level. If you use an external specialist, you pay their fees.
Recommended set-up. Windows 10 or 11, or macOS 12 or later; 8GB of RAM; a 13-inch screen or larger; broadband of at least 10 Mbps; and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.
Each week you join a 3-hour live class on Zoom with your trainer and other learners. In class you practise through group discussions, role plays, and skills practice built on realistic workplace scenarios. You might brief a team, give constructive feedback, or work through a strained working relationship while your trainer observes.
Between classes, you study online in our learning platform. You watch the videos and read the learning materials first, so class time goes on practice. Units open one at a time as you finish each one.
At Hader Institute of Education, learners are supported by our trainers and a dedicated Learner Support Officer. Support includes:
- Weekly live Zoom sessions with your trainer.
- One-on-one mentoring sessions monthly via Zoom or phone.
- Trainer support with responses within 72 hours on business days (Monday to Friday).
- Monthly outreach calls from the Learner Support Department.
- Employment assistance through our Job-Ready Program.
These services are designed to help you feel confident, connected, and ready to succeed throughout your course.
Assessments include written tasks, case studies, projects, and role plays in your Zoom class.
Do I need a qualification or management experience to enrol?
No. You don’t need a qualification, and the course is designed for people stepping into their first team leader or supervisor role as well as for frontline leaders. You do need to meet the entry requirements above, including the LLND assessment and Pre-Training Review.
Is the Certificate IV or the Diploma of Leadership and Management right for me?
Choose by the role you hold now: the Certificate IV is the place to start if you’re new to leading people or you lead a team’s work day to day, and the Diploma suits leaders who already manage a team’s performance. See how the two levels compare on roles, units, and entry.
Can my employer pay for the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management?
Yes. An employer can pay for your course, and we can invoice them directly. We also enrol teams. Each person still completes the LLND assessment and a Pre-Training Review before enrolling. Contact our team to discuss what you need.
How long is the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management?
The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management is designed to take 12 months: 48 weeks of scheduled classes plus a 4-week study break. To finish in that time, plan for about 26 hours of study a week, including your 3-hour live class. Outside the live class you set the pace, and assessments have no fixed due dates. If you need more time, you can apply for an extension with no additional fees.
What is the salary for a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management graduate in Australia?
SEEK job ads show what these roles advertise; they don’t measure graduate earnings. Pay varies widely by industry. Of the industries where SEEK lists team leader pay, community services, call centres, and construction have the most job ads, and team leaders there average about AU$81,000–AU$86,000 a year. Industries SEEK doesn’t list may pay less. Team leaders in accounting and banking average over AU$100,000 (SEEK, October 2026). These figures are indicative only and not a guarantee of earnings. Actual salaries vary by employer, location, experience, and qualifications.
Is the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management government funded?
Places at Hader are fee-for-service; none are state-subsidised or Free TAFE places. A Certificate IV isn’t eligible for a VET Student Loan at any provider. If you get Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, Parenting Payment (single), or another eligible payment, you may be able to get the Pensioner Education Supplement while you study. Services Australia decides who is eligible, so check with them before you enrol. If you’re working and pay the fees yourself, they may be tax-deductible as a self-education expense when the study maintains or improves the skills your current job needs; the ATO or your tax adviser can confirm this for you.
Is this the same as the Certificate IV in Frontline Management?
No. BSB40812 Certificate IV in Frontline Management was replaced in 2015 by BSB42015 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management, and the register maps the two as not equivalent. BSB40520 replaced BSB42015 in 2020 and is mapped as equivalent to it.
