What is the Counselling Short Course?

This course is for people who are drawn to counselling but aren’t ready to commit to a full qualification, and for workers already supporting others who want the counselling skills to do it properly.

You might be thinking about a career change and want to know whether the work suits you before you spend the money. You might already work in community services, aged care, education, or health, and find yourself having conversations you were never trained for. Or you might be returning to study after a long break and want something that proves to you that you can do it.

What you’ll be able to do

  • Hold a structured counselling conversation using active listening, reflection, and open questioning
  • Set clear boundaries and expectations at the start of a helping relationship, and work within your scope
  • Recognise the signs of domestic and family violence and respond safely
  • Work within the legal and ethical limits of the sector: confidentiality, duty of care, and mandatory reporting
  • Reflect on your own practice and know when to seek supervision

How the study works. Most of the course is self-paced online. The counselling skills are assessed in practice. You’ll take part in five assessor-led 90-minute Zoom role-play sessions in a small group of two or three learners, and record 11 shorter role plays yourself (10–25 minutes each, submitted through the learning portal with your photo ID shown on camera). That’s 16 in total, all assessed and all mandatory. Expect around 14–16 hours a week, with most learners finishing within three months.

Course Outcomes

The two counselling-skills units in this course, CHCCSL001 and CHCCSL002, are core units of the CHC51015 Diploma of Counselling, and so are four of the others. If you go on to enrol in the Diploma, you can apply for credit transfer for units you’ve already completed. You provide your Statement of Attainment, and the credit is applied under the Diploma’s packaging rules at the time you enrol. Where credit is granted, those units are credited rather than repeated.

That’s the point of this course: three months and AU$2,995 to find out whether counselling is right for you, and the option to carry the work into the Diploma if it is.

I’ve been studying with Hader Institute for the past year and am currently completing my Diploma in Youth Work. My experience so far has been nothing short of outstanding.I’ve had the absolute pleasure of having Viki as my lecturer. She consistently delivers rich, detailed education throughout our online classes. Viki is approachable, enthusiastic, and always eager to answer any question—never with judgment, always with encouragement.Hader Institute itself is incredibly supportive. They regularly check in with phone calls to see how I’m progressing and to offer any additional support I might need. That level of care is rare and genuinely appreciated. The learning environment is both supportive and informative. Compared to other institutions I’ve studied at, I can honestly say I’ve never felt so comfortable, accepted, and encouraged in an educational setting. The sense of being valued as a student makes a huge difference.Highly recommend Hader Institute to anyone looking to further their education in a welcoming and empowering environment.

I’ve been working in Community Services for the past six years. I got into this work because I love helping people, not because of my studies. When I finally decided to study, I spent a lot of time looking for the best option that would fit my life. I was working full-time as a youth worker, married, and had a newborn at home. I couldn’t go to face-to-face classes, so studying online was my only choice.I’m over 40 and hadn’t studied in more than 20 years, so starting again was really hard. Learning how to use a new website, understanding how the classes and assessments worked, and even things like what “RPL” meant were all new to me. After a long week at work, keeping up with classes felt overwhelming. I think it’s tough for any adult to go back to studying after so long.Even though it was a big challenge, the Hader Institute supported me all the way. They guided me, kept me on track, and made me feel like I was part of something. But the real difference for me was Viki Hannah. Her kindness, patience, and encouragement really helped me move forward. She saw the experience I already had and helped me believe in myself during some really hard times. I feel like I found a mentor without even looking for one — and that’s something special.I truly hope I can keep in touch with Viki, and it’s good to know I can always reach out to Hader Institute again if I ever need support.

Viki Hannah was an absolute great help to me during my course, provided me with one on one support every week to help me get through all my roleplay assessments, I alway felt that Viki went out of her way to make sure that I was supported in every way that I needed to be able to complete my study.had a great experience during my final work placement observation. Charlotte’s instructions to help me prepare for the assessment were very clear and helpful, and she also supported me with a job I am applying for. I’m very grateful for the guidance and support I received from Hader Institute of Education!

My Trainer was Viki Hannah, what I liked most about our work together in classes and assessment support was how approachable and supportive you were. You always explained things clearly and took the time to make sure I understood, especially when I felt unsure about certain parts of the work. Your encouragement really helped boost my confidence. You made a real positive difference to my experience. For example, during my assessment preparation, you gave really helpful one-to-one guidance that made the tasks feel more manageable. I felt more organised and motivated because of your help. Thank you

I am delighted to provide a referral based on my experience studying with the Hader Institute. After much contemplation, I began my studies in late October, enrolling in the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD). At the age of 55, I initially worried that I might be “too old” to return to education. To my surprise and delight, I’ve nearly completed my first course and have even progressed to the AOD Diploma.Choosing the right educational institution was a significant decision for me. The affordability of Hader’s fees and the flexible content delivery were key factors that made it stand out. I’ve found the option to attend Duane’s incredibly informative online classes when needed invaluable, while also having the freedom to request extra modules so I can study at my own pace. The support I’ve received from the trainers has been exceptional. Mika, in particular, has been wonderfully encouraging, and Sasha’s patience and wealth of knowledge have made navigating my studies much easier, even as I ask countless questions. As someone who isn’t particularly comfortable with technology, I’ve also greatly appreciated the simplicity and user-friendliness of the Axcelerate portal—it’s been such a relief.Embarking on this journey was a big decision, but I am now immensely grateful that I chose Hader Institute. The support, flexibility, and resources provided have made all the difference, and I’m thrilled with the progress I’ve made so far.

What are the most frequently asked questions about the Counselling Short Course?

What are the Learner Entry requirements for the Counselling Short Course?

You’ll need

  • To be 18 or over
  • To be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or hold appropriate study rights
  • To complete a short language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills (LLN) assessment before you enrol
  • To complete a pre-training review with us before you enrol

We’ll help you sort

  • The LLN assessment: an online check and a conversation with a trainer
  • Getting set up in the learning portal
  • The pre-training review itself, a call rather than a test

There’s a minimum standard to meet on the LLN assessment, and if you’re not there yet we’ll recommend a course that fits. The pre-training review is there so you start on the right course rather than the one that looked closest.

You don’t need Year 12, an ATAR, or any prior study. No police check or Working with Children Check is required, because this course has no placement component.

How will you learn the Counselling Short Course?

This online course offers a flexible, self-paced learning environment, allowing you to balance study with other commitments. The course includes pre-recorded teaching sessions, providing an interactive and engaging learning experience. You will also have access to real-world case studies and support from experienced instructors.

The Counselling Short Course fee varies depending on the provider. At Hader Institute of Education, the course costs $2,995.00, with interest-free weekly payments starting from just $28 per week. For full details, please refer to the Schedule of Fees and Charges.

What are the payment options for the Counselling Short Course?

You can reach us by phone on 03 8362 3113 or by email at info@haderinstitute.edu.au.

How long does the counselling short course take?

Within three months: around 160 hours of study at 14–16 hours a week. Most of it is self-paced, with scheduled Zoom role-play assessment sessions built in.

What do I get at the end?

A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment listing the units you’ve successfully completed. It’s a formal VET credential that records those units rather than a full qualification.

Is the counselling short course a counselling qualification?

No, and it’s worth being clear about that. It’s a short course made up of eight nationally recognised units. The full qualification is the CHC51015 Diploma of Counselling. This course is a way into it.

Can I become a counsellor with a short course?

Not on its own. Counselling roles generally ask for a Diploma or higher. What this course gives you is the core counselling skills, a Statement of Attainment for the units you’ve completed, and the option to apply for credit toward the Diploma if you continue.

Does the counselling short course count toward the Diploma of Counselling?

Six of the eight units, including both counselling-skills units, are core units of the Diploma. If you go on to enrol in the Diploma, you can apply for credit transfer for those six, under the Diploma’s packaging rules at the time you enrol. The other two may also count, depending on the electives you choose.

Does the counselling short course include work placement?

No. There’s no placement and none is required. Career support comes through the Job-Ready Program.

Do I need Year 12?

No. You need to be 18 or over, have the right to study in Australia, and complete a short language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills assessment before you enrol.

Can I study while I’m working?

Yes. That’s what it’s built for. The learning is self-paced. The Zoom role-play assessment sessions are 90 minutes, booked in advance, with several times offered each week so you can fit them around shifts.

How will I be assessed for the Counselling Short Course?

The assessment is conducted using a combination of realistic workplace tasks, projects, knowledge tests, response to case studies and feedback from supervisors. The following provides a brief explanation of the assessment methods that are to be applied: Written tasks; Case Study; Practical Activities and Demonstrations. You will also complete approximately 16 role plays to demonstrate your practical skills, including 5 assessor-led role plays and 11 non-assessor-led role plays based on realistic workplace scenarios.

Do I have a cooling-off period after I enrol?

Yes. If you provide notice to cancel your enrolment prior to or within 3 days of being accepted into a program, you are entitled to a full (100%) refund of fees. If you provide notice to cancel more than 3 days after being accepted, you are not entitled to a refund of fees. For full details, please refer to our Learner Handbook.

What is the refund policy if I need to cancel?

Our refund policy depends on when you provide notice to cancel your enrolment. Learners who cancel prior to or within 3 days of being accepted into a program are entitled to a full refund of fees paid. Learners who cancel more than 3 days after being accepted are not entitled to a refund. Please note that regardless of your payment method, you remain liable for the full course fees if you withdraw. If Hader Institute of Education is unable to fulfil its service agreement, you will be refunded the proportion of fees paid for services not delivered. For full details, refer to our Schedule of Fees and Charges or contact our team at info@haderinstitute.edu.au or (03) 8362 3113.
