What is the Diploma of Leadership and Management?

The BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management is a nationally recognised AQF level 5 qualification. You study it online over 12 months, with a live trainer-led class every week.

You already lead people, or you’re getting ready to. This qualification is for team leaders, supervisors, and middle managers in any industry who want formal skills in managing a team’s performance, leading difficult conversations, and running operational plans.

It also suits experienced leaders who have learned on the job and want a qualification that recognises it. If that’s you, ask about recognition of prior learning (see below).

The units focus on managing through others: team effectiveness, people performance, influence, emotional intelligence, and operational plans.

Study Pathways

The Diploma can lead into further business and management qualifications. Universities decide credit for earlier study case by case, so ask the university you plan to apply to.

The Certificate IV teaches you to coordinate operational plans; the Diploma teaches you to manage them, and adds units on developing critical thinking in others, managing people performance, and leading the development of diverse workforces. If you’re just starting out as a team leader, start with the Certificate IV.

If you manage in community services, our Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management (CHC62015) is a management qualification for that sector.

Compare both levels on our leadership and management courses page.

I’ve been studying with Hader Institute for the past year and am currently completing my Diploma in Youth Work. My experience so far has been nothing short of outstanding.I’ve had the absolute pleasure of having Viki as my lecturer. She consistently delivers rich, detailed education throughout our online classes. Viki is approachable, enthusiastic, and always eager to answer any question—never with judgment, always with encouragement.Hader Institute itself is incredibly supportive. They regularly check in with phone calls to see how I’m progressing and to offer any additional support I might need. That level of care is rare and genuinely appreciated. The learning environment is both supportive and informative. Compared to other institutions I’ve studied at, I can honestly say I’ve never felt so comfortable, accepted, and encouraged in an educational setting. The sense of being valued as a student makes a huge difference.Highly recommend Hader Institute to anyone looking to further their education in a welcoming and empowering environment.

I’ve been working in Community Services for the past six years. I got into this work because I love helping people, not because of my studies. When I finally decided to study, I spent a lot of time looking for the best option that would fit my life. I was working full-time as a youth worker, married, and had a newborn at home. I couldn’t go to face-to-face classes, so studying online was my only choice.I’m over 40 and hadn’t studied in more than 20 years, so starting again was really hard. Learning how to use a new website, understanding how the classes and assessments worked, and even things like what “RPL” meant were all new to me. After a long week at work, keeping up with classes felt overwhelming. I think it’s tough for any adult to go back to studying after so long.Even though it was a big challenge, the Hader Institute supported me all the way. They guided me, kept me on track, and made me feel like I was part of something. But the real difference for me was Viki Hannah. Her kindness, patience, and encouragement really helped me move forward. She saw the experience I already had and helped me believe in myself during some really hard times. I feel like I found a mentor without even looking for one — and that’s something special.I truly hope I can keep in touch with Viki, and it’s good to know I can always reach out to Hader Institute again if I ever need support.

Charlotte’s instructions to help me prepare for the assessment were very clear and helpful, and she also supported me with a job I am applying for. I’m very grateful for the guidance and support I received from Hader Institute of Education!

My Trainer was Viki Hannah, what I liked most about our work together in classes and assessment support was how approachable and supportive you were. You always explained things clearly and took the time to make sure I understood, especially when I felt unsure about certain parts of the work. Your encouragement really helped boost my confidence. You made a real positive difference to my experience. For example, during my assessment preparation, you gave really helpful one-to-one guidance that made the tasks feel more manageable. I felt more organised and motivated because of your help. Thank you

I am delighted to provide a referral based on my experience studying with the Hader Institute. After much contemplation, I began my studies in late October, enrolling in the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD). At the age of 55, I initially worried that I might be “too old” to return to education. To my surprise and delight, I’ve nearly completed my first course and have even progressed to the AOD Diploma.Choosing the right educational institution was a significant decision for me. The affordability of Hader’s fees and the flexible content delivery were key factors that made it stand out. I’ve found the option to attend Duane’s incredibly informative online classes when needed invaluable, while also having the freedom to request extra modules so I can study at my own pace. The support I’ve received from the trainers has been exceptional. Mika, in particular, has been wonderfully encouraging, and Sasha’s patience and wealth of knowledge have made navigating my studies much easier, even as I ask countless questions. As someone who isn’t particularly comfortable with technology, I’ve also greatly appreciated the simplicity and user-friendliness of the Axcelerate portal—it’s been such a relief.Embarking on this journey was a big decision, but I am now immensely grateful that I chose Hader Institute. The support, flexibility, and resources provided have made all the difference, and I’m thrilled with the progress I’ve made so far.

You can apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) against some or all of the units in the BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management. If you’ve been managing people for some time, RPL is worth asking about. RPL is an assessment of the skills and knowledge you’ve gained through work, life, or earlier study, measured against the units in this course. You’ll gather evidence of what you already do, and an assessor judges it against each unit. That assessment decides how much of the course RPL covers, so we can’t say in advance.

If you hold a nationally recognised qualification or Statement of Attainment with matching units, you can apply for credit transfer. We’ll verify your certificate first. We’ll talk you through both before you enrol.

Can my employer pay for the Diploma of Leadership and Management?

If you need more time, you can apply for an extension with no additional fees.

What is the salary for a Diploma of Leadership and Management graduate in Australia?

SEEK job ads show what these roles advertise; they don’t measure graduate earnings. Pay varies widely by industry. Of the industries where SEEK lists team leader pay, community services, call centres, and construction have the most job ads, and team leaders there average about AU$81,000–AU$86,000 a year (SEEK, October 2026). Industries SEEK doesn’t list may pay less. Middle-management roles are advertised under many titles; operations managers, one common example, average about AU$92,000–AU$107,000 in office administration and community services, and over AU$125,000 in construction, accounting, and consulting (SEEK, October 2026). These figures are indicative only and not a guarantee of earnings. Actual salaries vary by employer, location, experience, and qualifications.

Is the Diploma of Leadership and Management government funded?

Places at Hader are fee-for-service; none are state-subsidised or Free TAFE places. This Diploma can be paid for with a VET Student Loan at an approved provider, but Hader isn’t one, so a loan isn’t available for it here. If you’re working and pay the fees yourself, they may be tax-deductible as a self-education expense when the study maintains or improves the skills your current job needs; the ATO or your tax adviser can confirm this for you.

Do I have a cooling-off period after I enrol?

Yes. If you provide notice to cancel your enrolment prior to or within 3 calendar days of being accepted into a program, you are entitled to a full (100%) refund of fees. If you provide notice to cancel more than 3 days after being accepted, you are not entitled to a refund of fees. For full details, please refer to our Learner Handbook.

What is the refund policy if I need to cancel?

Our refund policy depends on when you provide notice to cancel your enrolment. Learners who cancel prior to or within 3 days of being accepted into a program are entitled to a full refund of fees paid. Learners who cancel more than 3 days after being accepted are not entitled to a refund. Please note that regardless of your payment method, you remain liable for the full course fees if you withdraw. If Hader Institute of Education is unable to fulfil its service agreement, you will be refunded the proportion of fees paid for services not delivered.
